LIRS supports improving the family-based immigration system to ensure the timely reunification of families. LIRS also supports the consideration of family unity in enforcement activities. We are deeply concerned that the U.S. immigration system separates families when Christian tradition and our own experience providing services to families nationwide uphold the central role of family in the formation of faith, character, and community. More information here.
As part of this belief, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) works with the Office of Refugee Resettlement, Division of Children’s Services (ORR/DCS) to promote the safety and well-being of unaccompanied children (UC) apprehended in the United States. As the number of unaccompanied children crossing the border has soared to over the past few years, ORR/DCS and its nonprofit partners like LIRS have played a critical role in their care and protection.
LIRS serves UCs and their families with a network community-based approach built on the strengths, assets, and leadership of our local partners in targeted communities with high rates of release. In partnership with ORR/DCS since 2006, LIRS has conducted home assessments and follow-up services to UCs. Based on LIRS’s experience and knowledge of the field, we have developed best practices, specialized trainings, and other tools and materials. We provide technical assistance for those within and outside our partner network to equip all involved in providing services to unaccompanied children with the right knowledge and information to succeed.
