Pray for Welcome

Through Stand for Welcome: LIRS Advocacy with Migrants and Refugees, you can join your voice with ours as Lutheran Immigration and Refuge Service works to create laws and policies that welcome newcomers and treat all migrants and refugees with dignity.

These sample prayers are suitable for personal or congregational use:

Prayer for Immigration Reform

Most Holy Lord,
You are ever present and ever merciful for people on the move. We thank you for the blessings of our own immigrant heritage. We thank you for the privilege of participating in the government of this great country. Help us as people of faith call boldly for justice in our immigration laws. May our call be heard and echoed by our legislators and our president. Amen.

Prayer for Family Unity

Most Holy Lord,
You instituted the family; you came to live on earth within a family, in you we are a family of faith. Protect and bless people on the move to reunite with family. Help us call boldly for immigration laws that keep families together and create reasonable wait time for family members to be reunited across borders. May our call be heard and echoed by our legislators and our president. Amen.

Prayer for Humane Enforcement

Most Holy Lord,
You are perfect in justice and perfect in mercy. Grant comfort and dignity to vulnerable immigrants in detention. Grant discernment to enforcement officers. Help us call boldly for alternatives to detention, humane enforcement and due process for all. May our call be heard and echoed by our legislators and our president. Amen.

Lord, please remember all who have fled their homelands to seek asylum in the United States, especially those in detention. Grant them strength and hope to endure, and grant them protection in our country. Amen!

Lord, please remember all who have found refuge or asylum in the United States. Bless and prosper their families in their new homeland, and inspire their new communities to embrace them. Amen!

Lord, please remember churches, agencies and individuals that serve vulnerable newcomers. Give them wisdom, patience, perseverance and love to minister effectively. Amen!

Lord, thank you for opportunities to welcome newcomers. Guide me that I might continue to be a blessing for their lives as you have been for mine. Amen!
