U.S. Refugee Program

2005 has just begun and Washington is already making preparations for the fiscal year 2006 (FY06) budget. The president will be introducing his FY06 budget proposal on February 7. Once Congress has received the proposal, the House and Senate will begin work on their budget resolutions.

Sufficient federal funding for key refugee accounts is vital to ensure service to the most vulnerable. LIRS joined other Refugee Council USA members in asking President Bush for very specific amounts for three core refugee accounts—the Migration and Refugee Assistance (MRA) account, the Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance (ERMA) account, and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Read the Refugee Council USA letter to the president.

Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to give high priority to these refugee accounts. Specifically, ask them to provide the following amounts: $982 million for MRA, $50 million for ERMA, and $667 million for ORR.
